Merchant caravans carrying silk, gold, ivory, exotic animals, plants and other precious commodities used to travel from Europe via Central Asia to the heart of the Empire. The Silk Road was not only about trading goods, but also about exchanging ideas and religious beliefs. This trip will allow you to travel in the footsteps of one of the most famous travelers ever, Marco Polo.

Day 1: Beijing  – Dunhuang  

  • Flight:   CA1287;  0640/1010 (Air China)
  • Upon arrival in Dunhuang, your local guide will pick you up at the airport and transfer to the hotel to get refreshed.
  • Visit Maogao Grottoes, which is famous for its Buddhist art.
  • Overnight in Dunhuang

Day 2: Dunhuang – Turpan (B,L)

  • Train:  K991; 1910/next morning 0811
  • Morning visit the Singing Sands Dunes and Crescent Lake, where the oasis meets the desert. Spring-fed Crescent Lake is set among towering sand dunes, from which you can enjoy spectacular views of the green oasis surrounded by endless desert landscapes.  Experience riding a camel at the Singing Sand Dunes 
  • In the evening,transfer to the train station for soft sleeper train to Turpan 
  • Overnight in the train

Day 3: Turpan (B, L)

  • Arrive in Turpan in the morning, the local guide will pick you up at the train station and then transfer to the hotel for rest   
  • After breakfast,visit Astana Tombs, the Flaming Mountain and the Bezeklik Caves, the site of Buddhist mural art. These 67 caverns are in a cliff face above the stunning Murtuk River gorge. We'll enjoy a meal with a local Uighur family. And your next stop is Karez Well. It is a local Turpan water system. It has been regarded as one of the three greatest water projects of ancient China together with the Du Jiang Yan Irrigation System, and the Grand Canal
  • Overnight in Turpan

Day 4: Turpan – Urumqi (B, L)

  • Morning visit Jiaohe Ancient Ruins. The city of Jiaohe was the capital of the Anterior Jushi Kingdom, concurrent with the Han Dynasty, Jin Dynasty and Southern and Northern Dynasties in China. It was finally abandoned after its destruction during an invasion by the Mongols led by Genghis Khan in the 13th century
  • Transfer to Urumqi and visit Xijiang Regional Museum. It is a large integrated museum and center for the collection and study of cultural relics in Xinjiang
  • Overnight in Urumqi

Day 5: Urumqi  Kashgar (B, L)

  • Flight: CZ6803; 0905/1050 (China Southern Airlines)
  • Morning take the flight to Kashgar.   
  • Kashgar is also the heart of Islam within China, and thus you’ll pay a visit to the Old Mud City, the Id Kah Mosque, the largest in China. This beautifully decorated mosque more closely resembles a mosque in Pakistan or Afghanistan than China, and will attract up to 10,000 worshippers for Friday prayers.
  • Then transfer to visit Abakh Hoja Tomb, the burial place of a Muslim missionary and saint, and his 72 descendants. It looks like a multicolored miniature with green tiles on the walls and dome
  • Overnight in Kashgar 

Day 6: Kashgar  Karakul Lake  Kashgar (B, L)

  • Breakfast at hotel  
  • Transfer to visit. Karakul Lake, which means “Black Sea”. If the weather is clear, its beauty will take your breath away. Around the lake, it is an ideal place for hiking and trekking. 
  • *It's around 3hrs driving from Kashgar to Karakul Lake (190km)*
  • Overnight in Kashgar

Day 7: Kashgar – Beijing (B)

  • Flight:  CA1478; 1625/2255 (overstop in Urumqi)
  • Breakfast at hotel  
  • Time for leisure until transfer to the airport for the flight back home
  • End of service

Trip Preparation

Xinjiang is a beautiful, rich and mysterious place, for the guests from other places, in order to make your journey more pleasant, smooth, and comfortable, please pays attention to the following notes:

The first: the diet
Xinjiang is an area with large population of Islamic-believing minorities, according to the doctrine of Islam; it is not allowed to eat pork, so please respect their beliefs and custom. In conversation, dining, please do not talk about such topics. In our arrangements of your travel, most of the meals will be arranged in Muslim restaurants; if you prefer the Han-Chinese food or you have some special request, please let us know in advance.

The other side, the Chinese food in Xinjiang is a little bit spicy and mostly is based on Sichuan, but also varieties of snacks for your choice, such as kebabs, hand pilau, baked buns, nang, and others. The most famous meal in Xinjiang is the roasted whole sheep, which is well known for all the people.  In summer, between July and September, many varieties of fruit appear in market, grapes, cantaloupe, watermelon, pomegranate, apple, peach, pear; apricot can satisfy your palate.  In Urumqi, the famous night snack streets are: "May First of Star lights snack street ", "Friendship Night Snack Street” and so on.

 

The second: the climate

The four seasons in Xinjiang is clear distinct, and the temperature difference between day and night is large.

The temperature in spring in Xinjiang is between 6 degrees above zero and 5 degree minus zero. Considering the large wind, the dry air and the strong ultraviolet radiation, for the tourists who coming to Xinjiang between March and May ,it is better to carry a number of moisturizing cream, sunscreen, sunglasses. About the clothes, thin sweater or thick coat can be the good choice.
In summer, the temperature is higher, and also the duration of the Sunlight is long. The average daytime’s temperature reaches 28 degree, and in Turpan, which is called the fire continent in china, the temperature reach 35-39 degrees. In the day time people need to drink more water. Although the temperature is high but the cool and fresh rest in the shade since every day there is the wind which reaches 3-4 degree. In the morning and evening it is cooler, so a thick coat
is still needed, especially in the high elevation place. For example, In Ili grassland ,Kanas alpine lakes, thicker clothes is necessary ,because the temperature in such places is about 10degree -20degree, people need to wear light shoes, also a simple main luggage is appropriate

 

The third: ethnic beliefs and religious practices

Xinjiang is an ethnic minorities region, local people have strong sense of religion, and each ethnic has its own custom .So be careful to respect the customs of ethnic minorities. Islamic believers do not eat pork, and it is a taboo in their daily life, this taboo must not be offended.

In the Muslim restaurant, according to their custom, after washing your hand, do not throw the hand .smoking, drinking alcohol are forbidden, do not talk about the topics related their taboo. Affected by religion, the custom in the northwest china is different from other place of china ,in your visit ,(for example when entering a mosque) ,be sure to follow the travel notes and the local custom .In any occasion ,do not mention political issues related to ethnic minorities.

The fourth: the dress

Due to the special climate, there is a saying: the local people wear fur coats in the morning, wear gauze at noon and eat watermelon around the fire stove at night.

Please prepare thick coat, sun screen, sun glass, also a sun hat is necessary. Considering the long duration of sunlight and strong ultraviolet radiation, to avoid the sunburn, a long-sleeved shirt is appropriate. At last, do not forget a comfortable pair of sneakers.

 

The fifth: others

The Kg is the unit of weight in Xinjiang.

Time difference exist between Xinjiang and Beijing,( during our tour we unify our trip with Beijing time). 

The sunrise and sunset in desert is very beautiful, let your camera be ready.

Due to strong wind and sands, the camera cover must always be prepared. 

In the Silk Road tour, perhaps some tourists don not get used to the climate, so please bring some common medicine.
Do not drink water immediately after eating fruit,
otherwise it causes diarrhea.

Often rinse the mouth to avoid oral lit. In order to avoid accidents, do not ride a horse too fast.
